Public safety and livability are top priorities for US cities big and small. As mayors continue to explore near and longer term smart city planning, more and more municipal leaders are looking at street lighting as an effective and efficient pathway to new city services and data that can help improve the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

Street lighting, for example, is ubiquitous and among a citie’s most valuable assets. Signify’s Interact City connected lighting system and lighting management software is currently in use in 37 countries by more than 1,000 municipalities to save energy, reduce operational costs and improve city services to neighborhoods and communities.

Last weekend in Boston, mayors from all over the United States gathered for the 86th annual USCM Conference. We had the privilege of speaking with a few mayors, who were happy to share their insights into the important role that lighting plays in making their cities safer and more prosperous.

Mr. Sly James, Mayor of Kansas City, Missouri
