UrbanStar, the new Philips post-top luminaire, designed in collaboration with West 8, was just launched this week in North America and already has a very strong reputation. Last March, UrbanStar was recognized by the 2012 red dot design award for product design in the lighting category. It has a modern and organic form that makes it unique.
The red dot design award is a prestigious contest which was held for the very first time in 1955. Since then, it has grown to be internationally respected and renowned in the design industry. In 2012, the award has 19 different categories, and has had over 4,515 registrations from 58 countries.
The jury for these awards paid attention to innovation, functionality, self-explanatory quality and environmental compatibility, yet again a sure way to indicate that Philips understands the industry’s challenges in these times where sustainability and performance are undeniably important aspects.
The ceremony for the 2012 red dot awards will take place in the Aalto Theater in Essen Germany, on July 2nd. Urban Star will afterwards be featured in a four-week special exhibition in the red dot design museum. For Philips, it is once again a great encouragement to keep on innovating by designing luminaires that can time and again push the limits as far as technology and aesthetics are concerned.
Here are a few of the designs that were among the 2012 red dot’s list of the best of the best. Know that this distinction is given for groundbreaking design. As you will see below, some of them are quite original to say the least.
There is the Geograph Rainforest Watch by Les Ateliers Louis Moinet. It is a two-pusher automatic chronograph with a second time zone. It also features genuine fossilized palm wood. It is important to mention here that for every single watch sold, Louis Moinet will make a donation to the Pulau Banding Foundation, which is an organization that works to preserve the Malaysian tropical forest of Belum-Temengor.
There is also the Recline Personal Cardiovascular Fitness Equipment by Duravit AG, another innovative design. As you can see in the photo, it features an ergonomic seat and pedals with a very elegant finish. And the machine can be hooked up to the Internet. A practicle exercise machine for people who lead a very busy life and who are good at multitasking.
And finally, let’s end with the companies that now have their names on the red dot Hall of fame. Here are just a few of them that have this honor: Philips LEDALITE, YAMAHA, Hilti and BRP.
Congratulations to all the winners. Good job West 8.
